Such an amazing book that really gets into your heart and soul. Not only to be a better person in your everyday living but also to be a better leader in your work place. Remember Jesus wasn't nice He was kind. Being a nice boss is great but what are you really getting accomplished from your team. Being a kind leader that is firm with your policies, gives you more respect with your employees. Really a great book to dive into and get to know who you are and make yourself shine.

This draws examples from the greatest leader of all time - people who initially didn't amount to anything are turned into great leaders. It goes to show that these same principles have existed for centuries. Great leaders have to adopt certain habits that are vital to commit to goals and the mission. Jesus reprimands his disciples in a manner lacking in today's leaders. It is a must read. I recommend it for everyone - whether Christian or not

If you like the one minute manager and you come from a Christian background you'll certainly love this book. Blanchard doesn't disappoint when he clearly and effectively links that Christ-like character that we are all to aspire to with solid practical application to modern circumstances. Wonderful read.

I really enjoyed this book because it is very practical. Blanchard and Hodges boldly approach the topic of leadership from a Christian standpoint. Many times we try to separate faith and business, but they are not two separate worlds. This book has helped me reevaluate my priorities and has led to a new type of leadership that can be applied in the classroom, in the home, and in the business world. The authors address different types of leaders, whether formal or informal, and whether personal or professional. I found this book to be credible and accurate because it resonates many of the theories from another text on small group communication: Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing (Second Edition) by Egolf and Chester. For example, the communication book listed honesty as one of the most desired traits in a leader. This is echoed in Lead Like Jesus, where it states that leadership is about relationships and results, and that relationships must be transparent. Furthermore, Egolf and Chester explain different leadership styles and theories on management. Lead Like Jesus explains why a Theory Y manager and a democratic leader are the best medium for effective leadership. This book focuses on the multiple dimensions of leadership: the motivation, the heart, the planning, and the execution. My experience as a university Teaching Assistant has shown me that no matter what leadership role we acquire, these aspects are all relevant. The motivation of leadership cannot be selfish because that detracts from group success. My motivation must be for the collective, and I must want to be a good leader, not just successful. The authors also hit the sensitive topic of our hearts, which is essential when applying religion to daily life. The way we conduct ourselves outside of church is a reflection of our hearts. By adopting the attitude of Christ, we are a servant leader. Jesus Christ has proven his effectiveness of leadership because he started with twelve ordinary men and coached them to create a global movement to stand the test of time. Furthermore, I appreciate how this book emphasizes the importance of having a vision for your organization. Sometimes we get lazy and think, "Oh, God will take care of it all! I'll just sit here." This book properly addresses how obedience is an action, and that in order to lead followers towards a goal, we must have a direction. Otherwise, it is a waste of time. Similarly, the book explains how ideas are not the end of the process: we must implement, evaluate, and then evolve. Impact is made to glorify God only when ideas are put into action. Then, as a coach, we must honestly and tactfully evaluate the performance of the group and the individuals (this is also recommended by Egolf and Chester). This feedback is then channeled to improve the organization.Overall, I found this book to be very useful. It is helpful in explaining how religion is a perspective to be applied to daily world interactions.

This book was a requirement for me to read for my classes, but I loved this book and the content it provided. It definitely provided me insight into what makes a great leader and traits that I need to work on for myself. I will be keeping this book!! Great read!!!

This has some valuable lessons leadership from the ultimate leader himself. It just depends on what you think leadership is. This is not a traditional leadership book. Rather, it is an examination of how Jesus led and how those principles can help you lead in today's world.

Excellent book by Ken Blanchard! A must-read for all leaders, especially those who would like to be the best leaders; and so learn to lead from the Greatest Leader, Jesus. He sets a wonderful Servant Leadership example for us to follow. He is the ultimate Servant Leader with the greatest impact on people/followers, and Ken presents effectively why and how we leaders should follow His leadership model. Thanks.Dr. Raj Selladurai

This book clearly one goal...to equip us to lead like the best leader of all time. Read carefully and be prepared to be challenged.

I had to buy this book to start my teacher training to become a yoga teacher. It was really difficult to understand at the beginning, but once I got used to the style of writing and read the first chapter a second time, I really enjoyed it. If you are planning to buy this book, get some time to clear your head and focus the first chapter or two and it will be a breeze. You won’t regret buying it!

Michael Stone knows his stuff. Writes an incredible book on the history and philosophy of yoga. We are using this book in my teacher training program through CorePower Yoga. I'd buy this book even if it were not part of the program. Well written and great knowledge. I highly recommend.

Lovely book focusing on yoga philosophy. The topic isn't for everyone, but I had to read this as a requirement to my yoga teacher training. I enjoyed it and will probably reference it again. There are some journal prompts and you don't necessarily read it cover to cover in one sitting.

This book is all about the 8 limbs of yoga and incorporating them into our modern life. This book is so needed right now with yoga being mainstream but the philosophy not really understood. Michael's take on each of the 8 limbs is very down to earth, practical yet profound. He writes with depth, clarity and a bit of humor. Def one of my new fav yoga philosophy books.

I am a yoga teacher and own many books. This is my favorite. It's the best book to pick up after reading through to add the extremely important, yet many times missed, element of philosophy into yoga teaching. It is also the book I recommend to new yogis to help them understand how to live yoga, not do yoga.

I love this book! Michael Stone helps you understand basic yoga philosophy and makes you think about your evolution as a yogi. I can read the chapters over and over to find ideas I didn't see before. Deep and pleasant reading!

An excellent beginner/intermediate guide to yoga philosophy, based in real practice and a love for the tradition. Michael Stone is easy to understand in sometimes 'heady' concepts, and he keeps a fresh perspective that it's all about practice and knowing yourself. I am a yoga teacher and I recommend this book to my students.

Bought this as a gift and they were excited to receive it.

Review

“Mr. Berger, who has reported on Hasidic communities for 30 years, plays the role of mythbuster…. The Pious Ones is a nice primer on Hasidim. There’s so much more to say on this subject, and no one is better placed to do so than Joseph Berger. ” (Wall Street Journal)“A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the world of Hasidim.… [S]olid research and approachable writing.” (Kirkus)“For those who’ve wondered about the black-hatted men in frock coats with long beards, Berger …provides many of the answers…. An absorbing read.” (Booklist)“Fascinating…, Although sympathetic, Berger does not romanticize the chasidim…. His book takes us on a remarkable journey into the complexities of their lives.” (Jewish Week)“The most intriguing sections in Berger’s book discuss the conflicts between Hasidim and the more secular, often Jewish, neighbors with whom they butt heads over issues of property, pluralism and women’s rights.” (New York Times Book Review)

From the Back Cover

Veteran New York Times journalist Joseph Berger takes us inside the fascinating, insular world of the Hasidim to explore their origins, beliefs, and struggles.Though the Hasidic way of life was nearly extinguished in the Holocaust, today the Hasidim—"the pious ones"—have become one of the most prominent religious subcultures in America. In The Pious Ones, New York Times journalist Joseph Berger traces their origins in eighteenth-century Eastern Europe, illuminating their dynamics and core beliefs, which remain enigmatic to outsiders. He analyzes the Hasidim's codified lifestyle, revealing its fascinating secrets, complexities, and paradoxes, and provides a nuanced and insightful portrayal of how their all-encompassing faith dictates nearly every aspect of life—including work, education, food, sex, clothing, and social relations—and helps them to sustain a sense of connection and purpose in a changing world. From the intense sectarian politics to the conflicts that arise over housing, transportation, schooling, and gender roles, The Pious Ones chronicles the ways in which the fabric of Hasidic existence is threatened by both exposure to the wider world and internal fissures within its growing population. What lies ahead for the Hasidim, and what lies ahead for American culture and politics as these ultra-Orthodox Jews occupy a greater place in our society?

#134,222 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Synopsis:This book is a journalistic (and not sociological) study of the lives of Haredi Jews. It's very eclectic in that it tries to give us a broad sampling of Hasidic groups. Berger spent a lot of time with the largest groups (especially the Satmar), although there were other groups mentioned (Lubavitch, Vishnitiz, Ger, Belz, Bobover). There was, mercifully, for people who may not know these terms, a glossary. There was not, however, an index (that would have been useful). This book does not have the careful discipline/ sociological bent of a similar book by Samuel Heilman (Defenders of the Faith: Inside Ultra-Orthodox Jewry). It comes across as a series of vignettes and articles that the author has written for the New York Times spliced into some other prose to make a full book. The vignettes were, for the most part, interesting. What did we learn? A bit about the legal strategies that the Hasidim have that allow them to live in the way that they want. (That was actually only about the last 1/3 of the book, in spite of the title. The first 2/3 were taken up with aforementioned vignettes.)Verdict: I don't recommend this book at the new price. It is fine for about $5. It only takes about 3 afternoons to read.

Many recent books, particularly memoirs, have taken aim at modern Hasidism, and with great justification. An often hostile and insular world, many Hasidic communities stifle freedom of expression, use economic and social pressures to force conformity, abuse government social services, fail to punish sex offenders in their midst, among other things.Certainly, this is all true. But in The Pious Ones: The World of Hasidim and Their Battles with America, by Joseph Berger, the author tries a middle road in his treatment of the many branches of Hasidism. Unlike the recent, harsh memoirs, or the idealized portraits of Hasidism by the likes of Elie Wiesel, Berger treats Hasids as real people, warts and all.The biographical portraits he presents are of people who more or less "fit" into the Hasidic; for some Jews, Hasidism works. Berger tells their stories with compassion and understanding.

Learning about a fascinating yet different culture broadens my appreciation for America and all its glorious diversity. As the oldest in a large Irish clan, I can appreciate the challenges of the large Hasidic families detailed in this book. However the description of the lives of women and girls in this culture, their lack of education and, more importantly, their lack of life choices was disturbing. The author's attempts to explain the reasoning behind this culture's philosophy and deeply held religious beliefs allowed those of us on the outside to appreciate the deep faith of these people.

I was astonished by the success of the Hasidim in keeping their children so ignorant of American life and customs. I wish the author had delved more deeply into the thoughts and emotions of the Hassidic women who face no choices in their lives' directions. If the Hassidic growth rate continues so rapidly I think there will be much greater backlash from society against having to accommodate their customs. There are some similarities to current backlash against Muslim immigrants who maintain their dress and other non-assimilation customs.

I find the Hasidim endlessly fascinating and thebook was eminently readable. I remember reading Buber on the great masters and find today's Hasidim rather sad. I can't help wondering how much brilliance perished in the Shoa.

I enjoyed the book, and I learned a lot. The writing made it easy to read. And there were plenty of good stories. My two complaints: the book really needs an index; and because the chapters seem to have begun as separate and discrete articles, there was a lot of unnecessary repetition that a good editor should have taken care of. (Why don't books have editors these days?)

Joseph Berger is a very good writer. He gives an accurate unbiased understanding of the inner workings of the Hasidic community.I really enjoyed it. And gained a lot of insight.

Overly admiring and rosy-colored view of a fundamentalist society. Sure, some people thrive in a tightly controlled environment with few choices, but many do not. This author's fawning treatment of the joy of Hasidic life is a warm fuzzy but he brushes right past the darker aspects of this insular world (.e.g., child sexual abuse swept under the rug, families threatened with financial ruin and violence because of minor transgressions, arranged marriages between strangers that, if you believe the author, never ever turn out badly for the participants, etc.) The info and facts about Hasidic history and customs in this book is good, but take it with a grain of salt. You should also balance this book by reading some of the many, many memoirs of people who escaped these communities.
