Awesome book about Ellis Island where my widowed grandmother brought in her 6 yr old daughter (my mom), 4 yr old son, and 18mos old baby boy. Last July (2015) I had visited the island and took the Hard Hat Tour of the hospital wing which showed these fantastic pictures along with everything else and this book keeps those memories out there!

While I like to support a museum by purchasing things in their shop, this book was sold out/back ordered when I visited Ellis Island. I ordered it on my app right then and there. The book arrived the day after I returned home. AND it was $10 cheaper.

If you've been to Ellis Island and taken the "Hard Hat" tour, or if you're planning a trip you will want to read this book explaining the photos of immigrants.

This is predominantly a photo book but there are some stories intermingled throughout. The story that is the most heartbreaking is one of a woman from Russia who immigrated to the United States with her two children. Her husband had previously immigrated to the United States and they had plans to join him. She contracted an eye infection which made her blind and she stayed in the Ellis Island hospital for a period of time. Her children were reunited with her husband, but when he was unable to afford to pay her hospital bills, the woman was shipped back to Russia where she remained until her death. It's such a sad story.Regarding the photos, the author took old photos of people on Ellis Island and intermingled them in different locations on the island. They were very fascinating. I traveled to New York City in 2011 but didn't have a chance to stop at Ellis Island. I hope to travel to Ellis Island one day but until then, this book is the perfect replacement!

For those whose ancestors came to America during the early twentieth century, Ellis Island evokes images of men, women, and children fleeing penury and oppression. The United States did not open her arms to everyone, however. Doctors and nurses examined the newcomers, looking for contagious diseases and mental disorders that might disqualify them from staying in America. Those who failed to pass muster were sent back to Europe. The time came when Ellis Island Hospital, which had opened in 1902 in a grand building on the southern half of the island, was no longer needed. In 1954, "the U. S. government declared Ellis Island surplus government property." The site fell into disrepair."The Ghosts of Ellis Island" shows to what extent this massive building deteriorated, with its crumbling walls; broken windows, fixtures, and furniture; and rust and decay everywhere. The unrestored portion of the hospital stands in marked contrast to the old black and white photos of spotless wards and operating rooms populated by stiff looking doctors and nurses in starched white uniforms. The refugees were probably bewildered and frightened. Would they be allowed to stay or be forced to leave, just "a stone's throw from Paradise"?A French artist named JR created an exhibit, "Ellis Island Unframed," that opened to the public in 2014. "The Ghosts of Ellis Island" gives us a taste of JR's vision and creativity. The book has stunning photographs in both black and white and color and drawings by Art Spiegelman. There are haunting images of refugees displayed against the hospital's derelict background; it is as if their spirits still occupy the hospital that once housed them. This is not merely a reminder of a bygone era. It is also a statement about what America stands for now. Is Lady Liberty still a benign figure for those seeking better lives? Or, as depicted in a drawing by Spiegelman, is she a fire breathing dragon aggressively ordering foreigners to leave?It would be a mistake to exploit Ellis Island's history to make a political statement. It is far better to remember and record, and let the pictures speak for themselves. My son is into the Flash and Dash from the Incredibles right now. He is about to go into 1st grade and this was great, he read it fine and actually keeps reading it several times a day. I've read it once and not too much of a story but I do have to remember it's a step 2 book LOL! Loved that there's quick appearances by the other superheroes!

Good reading exposure with some repetition and frequent use of sight words my son in prep is learning. The story really just explains how The Flash became The Flash with a few pages dedicated to sorting out the bad guys with the help of his Justice League friends. Despite being a big superhero fan, my son was much more delighted with revisiting One Fish, Two Fish by Dr Suess and there were many more of his sight words in this book with much more charming use of repetition. Despite being a bigger book he finds this easier to read for a beginner

Bought for a six-year-old. Was below his reading level but he still enjoyed it. He's a huge fan of the Flash and will read anything with the Flash in it. Great book for younger readers.

My ten year old Great Grandson loved this book. It was an easy read and for a boy who really doesn’t set reading s a top priority and he read it several times. Since he is an avid Flash Fan it was definently a high interest item.

This is a great book for early readers who love the Justice League! It's also good for younger kids who just like looking at pictures and for parents who want a quick bedtime story. The book covers Flash's origin story and joining the Justice League team - it's very cute and full of super hero action!

It is a very nice Bible, large, easy-to-read font type. However, I noticed a misprint in 2 Kings 12, where the Subtitle says "Joash's Reign" Where it should be "Johoash's." I check against another Bible and confirmed the error. My main concern is, if there is an error in one place, how many more errors could be there?

Words and scriptures have been changed!!

I love it! I like the white ribbon book mark-place holder. The words are large print which is what I was looking for and I also like the size and thinness of the it.

Catherine Marshall's classic essay on the Holy Spirit is a must read for any Christian who has any questions at all about the Holy Spirit in Christian living. Written as a result of her extensive study on "the Holy Ghost" who had that time she knew only from benedictions, creeds and baptismal formulas, she avoids theological extremes and concludes He is our "Helper", approachable by all and relevant for everyday ordinary Christian living

"The Helper" is the best book on the Holy Spirit I have read, and I've read many. I think it's because the author does not focus on the "gifts" of the Spirit, nor even on the "fruit" of the Spirit. Rather, she centers on the "person" who is The Holy Spirit. We, as believers,understand developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This book shows us that God wants us to develop a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit too. In fact, in the Church age, the Holy Spirit IS THE manifestation of God we experience... and He always points us to Jesus. This is a refreshing book without the goofiness.

This read was recommended to me and it truly opened my eyes, heart, spirit, and soul to a real and personal relationship with God, His only Begotten Son the Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. It helped put my beliefs and views in perspective and through it God Almighty has drawn me too a spirit of repentence, for which I am truly grateful. Highly recommended for those who are stumbling in their Christian walk.

Some years ago, the Holy Spirit called me to learn more about the help He wants to give us. This book was recommended to me by our Pastor's wife. After reading it, I had to share it with others. So far, I've lead four classes using this book and have enjoyed witnessing the changes the Holy Spirit brings as He is welcomed and sought out for guidance. Was asked to research a book on the Holy Spirit for a men's bible study. All the "big" names came up and reviewed books by Tozer, Sproul, et al. While they are powerhouses of information, this book by Catherine Marshall is direct, well organized and mostly application oriented. So not just what to know but what to do. I would highly recommend this book from this interesting author for a group study, personal study or daily devotional. Blessings!

I had a copy of this book long ago and lost it traveling but never replaced it. So glad to have a copy agin in my possession. Catherine Marshall beautifully & eloquently communicates the ethereal connection between mortals and God via His Holy Spirit in a format that can easily be adapted to daily devotional readings or read straight through. We are not alone in the universe--we have The Helper.

It arrived in excellent condition. The impact of Catherine Marshall's understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is as relevent today as the day she wrote it.
