Giants: The Global Power Elite, by Peter Phillips

Review

“Adam Smith warned that the ‘masters of mankind’ will pursue their ‘vile maxim: All for ourselves, and nothing for other people.’ There could hardly be a more apt description of the recent era of savage capitalism, straining for new heights under cover of Trump’s antics. Who exactly are the masters? This remarkable inquiry lifts the veil, providing detailed and often shocking revelations about the astonishing concentration of private wealth and corporate power, its institutions and integrated structure—and not least, its threat to civilized and humane existence.” —Noam Chomsky     “Peter Phillips’s book is a timely reminder that as the transnational capitalist class/global power elite changes it is vital that critical researchers keep up with these changes. The reader will find impressive documentation of the institutions and personnel driving capitalist globalization in its destructive and relentless search for growth and profits.” —Leslie Sklair, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, London School of Economics and Political Science   “This innovative inventory of the globally networked power resources of mega-capitalists belongs on the book shelves and computer devices of every journalist and social activist. Thereby they can check global money laundering and business veiling strategies in terms of pervading power and exploitation.” —Peter Ludes, founder of the German Initiative News Enlightenment     “Meet the Giants who really run the world in this timely and important new book, a potent combination of scholarly research and citizen call to arms. Not since C. Wright Mills’s Power Elite has a single book had the potential to transform the way we think about globalization.” —Rob Williams, PhD, University of Vermont   “A tour de force of research and analysis on a frequently ignored but crucial topic affecting humanity’s future: the transnational capitalist class power elite. An extraordinary contribution.” —Dr. Laurence H. Shoup, author of Wall Street’s Think Tank     “The dire challenges facing people and planet are not accidents. They are products of a system in which a relatively small corporate elite use their domination of resources to increase their wealth, to control governments, and to marginalize or destroy those who might impair their power. Sociologist Peter Phillips goes beyond this generalization by identifying, in great detail, the actual people and corporations at the core. This book is a must read for those who believe that system change is necessary, who want to understand which players are most central to the system, and who are prepared to learn how the system can be transformed.” —Marc Pilisuk, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of California, and faculty, Saybrook University     “Peter Phillips carefully uncovers the manipulative ways used by global class elites to keep the world safe for the Superrich—those who try to save capitalism from itself, a foul story we all need to hear and challenge. And Phillips does it splendidly.” —Michael Parenti, PhD, author of The Face of Imperialism     “In this important book, Peter Phillips has advanced progressive thinking about power in several ways. He has expanded sociologist C. Wright Mills’s model of social structure from the national power elite to the transnational capitalist class. He identifies key power-holders within that class, thus highlighting an ethic of individual as well as institutional accountability. And he does so within a consistent human rights framework that is much required in today’s political climate. Giants: The Global Power Elite is a crucial map for desperately needed social change.” —Prof. Robert Hackett, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University     “The unabated global concentration of capital and deepening inequality is putting humanity on the brink of extinction. The financial behemoths running this oppressive and violent economic order have largely operated in the shadows, but Peter Phillips names the names in his latest work. “Giants answers, in great detail, the commonly asked but rarely answered question: who really pulls the strings? This book outlines the handful of individuals who manage the most powerful think tanks, investment firms, and corporate boards, who make society’s decisions at the expense of the planet. “Giants is an essential tool to understand those at the reigns of empire and capitalist hegemony, so we can be empowered to fight for our survival.” —Abby Martin, host of the investigative news program The Empire Files     “Following decades of research on power elites, Peter Phillips’s book Giants exposes the power networks that link the world’s wealthiest individuals and organizations and the ideological justifications that sustain their power. Impeccable original research provides the foundation for an impassioned call to action that reflects Phillips’s abiding commitments to social justice and human rights. This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand socioeconomic inequality in the twenty-first century, and it is vital inspiration for those committed to creating a better world.” —Andy Lee Roth, associate director of Project Censored      “If the well-being and effective functioning of democracy is based on serving the peoples’ interests first, we must hold accountable parties who abuse public trust and resources under an impartial application of the rule of law.  Apart from the standard elected and government bureaucrats, Peter Phillips challenges us to re-evaluate the role of powerful financial interests in shaping American life. More than a discussion about an abstract elite, Giants enumerates key players by names, interests, and roles. Valuable material for people who like critical thinking.”  —Loan K. Le, PhD, president and CEO of the Institute for Good Government and Inclusion (IGGI)     “If you want to know who is actually ruling the world—read this book.  “If you want to know the organizations they use and the networks that create them—read this book. “If want to know ‘what needs to be done’ to stop them from destroying the planet—read this book and then take action.” —David Cobb, 2004 Green Party presidential nominee, co-founder of Cooperation Humboldt     “Giants: The Global Power Elite is an admirably accessible outing of the global oligarchy. The graphics work well and the writing is very clear and engaging. Peter Phillips has collected an awesome range of data and presents it really well. I salute his efforts here and hope the book finds many readers.” —William Carroll, professor of sociology, University of Victoria     “Dr. Phillips does an incredible job of detailing the seventeen global financial giants who carry most of the power and control in our world, those who contribute to many of the social problems we are struggling with worldwide, but who often remain hidden from accountability. As a radical sociologist whose work is reminiscent of the great C. Wright Mills, Dr. Phillips names these giants and gives the reader a useful primer for social activism. He details how these groups stay protected by private security firms and the ways in which media spin keeps them looking clean. Speaking truth to power, Dr. Phillips ends his work with an open letter to these global giants, which I proudly signed, inviting them to reimagine a more just society.” —Susan Rahman, PhD     “Giants: The Global Power Elite is a must-read for anyone concerned with how the concentration of wealth in the hands of a small number of global political elites affects the well-being of humanity and the ultimate sustainability of life on earth. In the best tradition of political sociology with a strong, data-driven analysis, Peter Phillips demonstrates that a small global power elite has ‘rigged’ a global economy to serve its own interests at the expense of the well-being—even the longevity—of humankind.” —anthropologist Donna Brasset, PhD     “This book is a fearless expose of the ascendancy of a class of global elites and the power they wield around the world. Brilliantly argued and meticulously documented, the pages of this book lay bare the connections between power and wealth, and identify a system that allows a small minority of billionaires to control vast resources of the earth to devastating consequences. Phillips writes with compassion and humanity, and also tells us that unveiling mechanisms of power is a necessary first step in reshaping a global economic system to address the current crises of democracy, equality, and environmental destruction.”  —Robin Andersen, professor of Communication and Media Studies, Fordham University     “The global elite, with their associated armies and police forces are, at an accelerating rate, destroying the planet based on their bottom line, which clearly appears to be corporate profit and power at all costs. Indeed, the planet, our children, and grandchildren are facing a very bleak future if these titans of global control continue to have their way. Their policies have already carried us to the brink, putting life as we know it in jeopardy. Giants: The Global Power Elite is a field guide to what these greedy destroyers are up to in the name of profit and global control of planetary resources. Read it and weep, and then act to resist it however you can. As Joe Hill said: Don’t mourn, organize.” —Dennis J. Bernstein, executive producer of the award-winning daily radio news magazine Flashpoints and author of Special Ed: Voices from a Hidden Classroom     “This book, a who’s-who of the global power elite, is a timely and important addition to the work on the Transnational Capitalist Class. Peter Phillips shows that a mere seventeen institutions of financial capital, and the individuals who run them, exert a stunning degree of control over the fate of humanity. Dominated by white males of European descent, this inter-connected global power elite ensures the continued growth of capitalism at the expense of the vast majority. It is a must-read for all scholars and activists committed to economic equality and social justice.”   —Deepa Kumar, president of Rutgers AAUP-AFT faculty union, associate professor of media studies at Rutgers University"We all know that 'they' run the world, or much of it; and we know that their only purpose is to make themselves still richer; and that this compulsive enterprise is killing all the rest of us, by spreading poverty, creating endless war, and terminally poisoning the earth. We know how powerful they are, and what it's doing to us; yet we don't know exactly who 'they' are—information that we very badly need, and that "our free press" has not provided us, nor is it regularly taught in any schools, because the press and schools are largely theirs. And so those of us who want to break their chokehold are indebted (in a liberating way) to Peter Phillips, thanks to whom we finally know the names and stories of those 199 lethal super-managers. Picking up where C. Wright Mills left off with his invaluable dissection of the "power elite" that used to run America alone, Phillips thoroughly identifies the members of the "transnational capitalist class" that largely runs the world today, through the mammoth instruments of Western military force, an international "intelligence community," and—not least—"our free press." It is a daunting explication of the fix we're in today; and yet Phillips also gives us hope, by pointing up the possibilities for real resistance, and a path toward (real) democracy. For anyone who wants to know precisely where we are today, and why—and who knows that we can and must go somewhere else—Giants is a book to read, and recommend, right now."—Mark Crispin Miller PhD, Professor Media Studies, New York University

This book is mostly just a useless (to most people) long list of names of people on corporate boards, but the short essays that frame the list give an essential picture of the utter rottenness of our feudal capitalist world. Of course the academic who wrote it is very circumspect about what he says, as he must in order to preserve his job and life; much more damning info could have been provided about the kleptocratic, criminocratic, oligarchic, evil socio-economic system we live under. So, what am I, some sort of commie or something? No, I believe in a mixed economy--maybe something like what China is doing minus the communist party and with a lot more personal freedom. It is clear, anyway, that the corporate system of rule by utterly ruthless immoral money making machines (think Monsanto) and ueber-rich people who weild the power of gods on earth and own the government needs to be overthrown for a decent civilization to be established.

The book continues the dialogue to educate folks as to the "Why" so many are asking. Why can't we get ahead? Why are folks so divided? Why are politicians from both parties the same? Why is there so much inequality? This book shows both Why & Who is at fault, i.e., who controls; it names the names. You'll learn who "they" are. Remember Geo Carlin's "They own you! They've got politicians, the judges, the corporations, the media.... They've got you by the b---ls" comedy skit? Well; here's who "they" are in a great nutshell read. It's a fast and good read. Finally, the author provides many citations and other book/sources from which you'll learn more. Those who've read these other sources will enjoy the updated re-cap and knowing that the torch remains lit. Pass it on....

What a book! It arrived and is a well made oversized paper back. Would highly recommend.

This is a book I highly recommend. Learn about those who make financial policy, policies that effect all our lives.

In GIANTS, Peter Phillips has done something found in no other book in print. He goes beyond the general concept of the "1% vs. the 99%" to actually tell us which corporations and which Power Elite members of the "transnational capitalist class" are the central institutions and people running the world today. He does this in the context of an incisive analysis of how global capitalism is operating today and where it is headed. This includes a penetrating look at each central element of today's capitalist system: The ultra-rich plutocracy that holds such an immense share of the world's assets; the Boards of Directors, CEOs and other executives who run the show; their tight network of linkages with each other; the small group of decisionmakers and policymakers at the very top; and the system of militarizatiton and permanent war that protects global capitalislm, and the astoundingly concentrated media and advertising industry that brainwashes the world into accepting the status quo. A unique feature is the combination of no-holds-barred scrutiny of how the system operates with the identification of the specific companies and individuals who are guiding and operating the system. This is no casual broad-brush treatment, but rather the careful work of a masterful sociologist exercising his craft. He has taken up where C. Wright Mills, author of The Power Elite, left off before his untimely death in the mid-twentieth century and has performed the remarkable task of identifiying the pieces of the puzzle and its actors at a global level. The book makes a remarkable contribution to our knowledge of the present world system and provides a foundation for constructive transformation into a form less likely to lead to social and environmental disaster.

This brilliant, informative book is essential reading for every thinking person who cares about the survival of humanity.

This is a very informative expose about the reach of what is called Trans Continental Capitalism, but what is more commonly known as Global Capitalism. This is a remarkable book, ideal for a news junkie wanting to understand the news better, to the activist wanting to know what he or she is up against, or to the general reader. However you call it, this book describes the current global economic picture, with a big difference. It starts from the bottom up. Giants first briefly explains how Global Capitalism began, how we got here, and then identifies the players from the bottom up. Phillips actually identifies the “managers” of this network, naming names, giving a roster of the usual suspects, when they were born, where they went to school, their family history and a brief employment history, and, where available, their salary. Phillips then describes the Think Tanks that provides the justifications for Global Capitalism, he describes the associations in which they work, and then lists and describes the political, monetary, and military apparatuses they service. We see names of associations we’ve seen before in the news which are still alive and well. We see the Trilateral Commission (yes, it is still around), the Council of Foreign Relations, and the Bilderbergers. You will be surprised to see names not familiar, but nefariously present nonetheless. The list of persons and organizations are boggling. Boggling too is their shared characteristics. Philips limits his inventory to organizations having more than one trillion — yes, that’s with a “T” — dollars in their portfolios. This is also a group which conduct business among themselves: While a small percentage of their profits are diverted to the public at large, they generally only do business with, and interlock their memberships, among themselves. This gives graphic meaning to the term, “trickle down” economics. While it may be difficult to do so, Phillips does a good job in toning down politically loaded words and avoiding a social or political agenda. The book is intended, and Philips succeeds, in providing a neutral Who’s Who to Global Capitalism.

Not really happy with this book at all. If you are looking for a how to, on traditional Cherokee/Eastern crafts......this is NOT the book you want to buy.The cover illustration is why I purchased this, and all that was in the book regarding this illustration was the same pic, with a brief paragraph saying it was of Mississippian origin. No details what so ever.Save your money if you are expecting any real how to's , or good information

Donald Sizemore, who is Cherokee, has written and illustrated a wonderful book regarding our ceremonials dances and regalia. I am Cherokee, and use the book when I am teaching others, who are of Cherokee heritage, but were raised outside of their culture and traditions.

Some would say that this book is where the author left off in his prior book on How To Make Cherokee Clothing. However, the book is much more.In the book, the author goes farther than he has in the past. He gives better illustrations and goes more into detail about Cherokee culture.I still say that the author fails in delineating what time period of Cherokee Culture that he is talking about when he is showing an item for example. I also still say that his patterns are lacking. With that said, his models have improved considerably. The illustrations are more professional than in his prior book. Indeed, this is just an all around better book. There are a few things that do not jive with the prior book that he has written. For instance, in the prior book he talked about how the chief used deer toes around his ankles. In this book, there are no deer toe anklets and the moccassins of the chief now have turkey spurs. Another oddity is that in his prior book he talked about how the bear dance was lost forever from the Cherokee people...yet in this book he talks about what to wear and how to do the bear dance.Any reader of this evaluation should note that this book WILL NOT teach you how to do Cherokee dances. There are no foot steps, no musical notations, etc. In fact, some pictures show people in a dazed and confused pose with captions noting that the models are "trying" to recreate the dances. Truly, the most that you can hope for is learning a chant or two. And, in some regards, you have to be skilled in crafting without a pattern (often relying on your own knowledge of Cherokee crafts) if you can even begin to hope for a specific project to turn out like something from the book.Indeed, the author's skills are evolving. But, there is still much room for improvement. Yet, I am confident that the author has what it takes to be the first in American history to to a comprehensive anthology of Cherokee culture with the history, delineated period dress, stories, healing methods, dance steps, written music, chants, writings, culture, etc.At present, the author is a blib on the radar of Cherokee culture. I feel that he can be so much more. This is not to say that I give 5 stars to this book because it is a great book or that the author is a great writer. In reality, the book is poorly written, poorly organized, and seriously lacking in many respects. However, what it excels in is that it is an excellent piece in preserving certain aspects of a rapidly dying Cherokee culture. Often, what you find in this book you will not find elsewhere. Too many authors are trying to lump us together with other tribes and even the Mayans and Aztecs. This author stays CHEROKEE and does all things Cherokee. For that, this book is deserving of 5 stars and a sincere "THANK YOU" for its contribution to Cherokee history and cultural preservation.

This is certainly a very informative book and I love its clear presentation and history.

Its OK

This book is such a beautiful compilation of info and drawings. Well done, a must for your library. Thanks much!

I thought some of the illustrations were less than professional looking. I have not read all of it yet, but the information is pretty good so far.

Very detailed and informative book, but I thought it was illustrated. Where are the illustrations? (I got the Kindle version.) Also, the formatting gets messed up and makes it difficult to understand what is being explained. Probably best to get the paperback.

I first heard about Undone from my wife. She is a friend of the author, Michele Cushatt, having attended college with her and now being Facebook friends. I wasn’t planning to read the book because I put it in the category of a “chick book.” I know there are movies that guys refer to as “chick flicks” so I kind of put this memoir into that category – a book for women written by a women. My wife started reading it and kept talking about how much she enjoyed it, so I decided to get a copy. I’m glad I did.The subtitle of the book is “a story of making peace with an unexpected life.” Not only is Cushatt a gifted writer (she has a way with words), but part of her story had similarities to where my wife and I have been. She writes about the pain of divorce, an ongoing battle with cancer and managing a family with a biological child, two step-sons and three foster children. While I have never struggled with cancer, I related to enduring divorce and experiencing blended families and adoption.Cushatt writes with an honesty that keeps the reader turning the pages. She shares the lessons she’s learned, the struggles she has add and how she handled adversity – including the good, bad and ugly.I appreciated her humor that is sprinkled throughout her book. In discussing her diagnosis of cancer and the responses she received from people. This example reveals her sense of humor and she related this response from one person – “And my personal favorite: ‘My friend was diagnosed with the same kind of cancer as you. He died a few months ago.’ Thank you. Super helpful.” Now that’s funny! This is potentially my favorite quote of the book from a powerful chapter. In chapter 16 she tells about going to Christmas Eve service with her three “littles.” You have to read the chapter to appreciate all that is going on, but as she brings the story to an end, she writes these words that she shared with a friend: “Just because something is hard doesn’t mean we’re not called to it. And just because it’s hard doesn’t mean it’s not good.”Undone was a compelling read and as I read it, I know the Cushatt’s story is not over. If your life has ever taken an unexpected twist, you will appreciate the words this book contains.

An unexpected life. Isn’t that what all of us live? As a young girl I had many dreams and even more plans. Unexpected is the perfect description of what my life has been and something tells me you would probably say the same thing. As we grow up we dream of the perfect husband, house and number of kids the key is what we do when life turns out nothing like or even only partly like our dream. Michele Cushatt’s latest book Undone is an amazingly written memoir of her unexpected life.I am an avid reader but I have to say I cannot remember the last time I read a book which impacted my heart and mind as much as Undone.Michele’s vulnerability and transparency is an amazing blessing. She not only tells of the events of her unexpected life but shares her heart of both struggle and expectance through it. Her ability to show God’s hand and will in the middle of the mess is just what my heart needed. It was a blessing to hear of how Michele struggled through an unwanted divorce, the blessing of a remarriage at the same to the challenges of step parenting, blending a family, battling cancer and adopting 3 high needs children. None of these events were her dream but through the journey of her life she sees how they were God’s plan for her.Michele reminds us that in the thick of life we have to remember that God is good. He is there with us. He can see what we can not and He calls us to trust Him. Learning to take a step back and see the big picture is an awesome gift which will encourage our heart like so few other things will.In the final pages of her book I find one of my favorite quotes:“I’m undone. Hungry, questioning, searching, struggling. Not even close to polished and pristine. But I’m breathing. And believing. And loving this crazy, unexpected, and imperfect life.”Is not this the words of all of our hearts?Undone is a MUST read! I know it will bless, encourage, challenge and infuse hope in your heart as it did mine.Rayna NeisesHeart CoachTake Heart Coachingwww.TakeHeartTransitions.com

This book was recommended to me by a friend. And, if I'm being honest, I bought it and it sat on my kindle for a while. Until the middle of an ordinary day, when I had one of those "parenting adolescents" breakdowns. You know, the ones the Michelle perfectly describes in this book? I don't know if Michelle reads these reviews, but I have to say, THANK YOU. For writing what was in my heart, and in my head. For redirecting me back to what God wants me to remember, and where my faith lies anchored. Since I read this book, I believe I've re-read it about 5 times by reading various chapters to remind me that I'm not alone in this journey of trying to control situations, step family blending (I especially love the analogy of screws and nails in a blender- just right). I might have worn out the kindle reading the "UnMother's Day" chapter more than 5 times.Anyway, the writing is great - witty, serious, straight forward. The message, just the same. I love that Michelle is not afraid to reveal the truth of things - especially in a world where we all value the appearance of a perfect family, perfect life. I highly recommend buying this book, and reading it at least twice!
