Review

"Finally a book with clear guidelines for people wanting to solve their gastrointestinal distress and disease. Because the gut is the center of our emotions, most GI problems must be addressed both physically and emotionally. Unfortunately, this is rarely done. What makes this book so transformative is that it brings the perspectives of both an integrative functional medicine doctor and a doctor of clinical health psychology. Anyone willing and able to follow the suggestions put forth by Doctors Plotnikoff and Weisberg should be able to resolve their gut distress. I would rate this book a ten out of ten for excellence." -Bill Manahan, MD, assistant professor emeritus, University of Minnesota Academic Health Center"If you or a loved one have suffered too long from gut distress, this book is for you. Trust Your Gut is a great resource for recovery. It will show you how to use scientifically grounded, natural methods that are easily accessible. I recommend it highly." --Andrew Weil, MD, author of Spontaneous Happiness and the #1 New York Times bestselling Spontaneous Healing

This book just takes me around in circles. It keeps directing you to a website that lists other books and audiobooks that I completely relevant to the subject matter. It's very frustrating because anything the author says is helpful or something extra is not listed on this website. Glad I didn't pay full price for it.

I'm sorry to go against the grain here, but the approach in this book may do a few people some good, but when you are running to the bathroom all day or are so constipated you can't see straight, it's a bit unrealistic to feel happy with the signals your gut is telling you. I am an R.N. with a degree in Human Services, have had IBS for five years and discovered on my own about the research of FODMAPS coming out of Australia. To say it has been helpful is an understatement. So. please, people with IBS, try the FODMAP diet first - this emerging treatment has now caught on with US registered dieticians, and it will save you from having intestinal distress much of the time. Order this book as an adjunct. But buy as your primary resource, The Complete Low-Fodmap Diet by Shepherd and Gibson

Great suggestions for anyone with gut issues, not necessarily IBS. Helped me devise a method to determine why I have so much gas. Good general health rec's as well. One complaint is the chapter on sleep issues is straight out of the "sleep hygiene" textbook, which is not very creative or individualized; then again, this is not primarily a book on sleep disorders.

Good read . . . I have colitis and this book did help. Makes you really think about how your mind affects your body functions! It helped me quite a bit.

Read the book, and enjoyed it. However, it's difficult to track down a specific quote by Ken Wilber and I was hoping to cite his original work. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. The quote reads: Awareness, in and of itself, is transformative. Thank you.

Sorry, but wasnt very helpful information.

Disappointing and not helpful.

I found it very annoying that the book constantly stops what it is doing and refers the reader to a continuation of the discussion in a linked website. But when you attempt to go to the website, you find out that it does not exist. This is not just once or twice. This happens constantly, in every chapter. You have paid ten bucks for the Kindle book, but instead find you have been conned by a bait and switch.

From the Inside Flap

Any Baedeker will tell us "where we ought to travel, but only Alain de Botton will tell us "how and "why. With the same intelligence and insouciant charm he brought to How Proust Can Save Your Life," de Botton considers the pleasures of anticipation; the allure of the exotic, and the value of noticing everything from a seascape in Barbados to the takeoffs at Heathrow. Even as de Botton takes the reader along on his own peregrinations, he also cites such distinguished fellow-travelers as Baudelaire, Wordsworth, Van Gogh, the biologist Alexander von Humboldt, and the 18th-century eccentric Xavier de Maistre, who catalogued the wonders of his bedroom. The Art of Travel is a wise and utterly original book. Don't leave home without it.

Far from expectations I had for my first travel book, yet quite impressed.I was intrigued by the artistic and philosophical approach that De Botton used to describe travel experiences. I've gained much insight from works of 18th and 19th century writers and artists including: Humboldt, Flaubert, Wordsworth, Thomas Gray, Van Gogh, Ruskinsnd De Maistre.I encountered many quotes that resonated with me, including:"Journeys are the midwives of thought. Few places are more conducive to internal conversations than a moving plane, ship or train.""There are certain scenes that would ASEAN atheist into belief without the help of any other argument.""A dominant impulse on encountering beauty is the desire to hold on to it: to possess it and give it weight in our lives. There is an urge to say, 'I was here, I saw this and it mattered to me.'"I recommend this book to fellow travellers and art lovers.

Wow, what a thought provoking book! For someone who has a ferocious appetite to travel (and does both personally and for work) it gave me a fresh perspective on how one should go about traveling and experiencing the world. This is a story of de Botton's experiences intertwined with stories from some of the greats of our history (e.g. Pascal, Neitzsche, Baudelaire etc.). It literally takes you on a journey from the anticipation of travel all the way through to the return to your home and life.I normally would read this book quite quickly however throughout there were sections that made me stop and reflect on my own travel experiences. At each page turn my values and approaches to travel was challenged and critiqued and I loved it!Three key takeaways from the book:1. I'm torn between Pascal's perspective of truly enjoying and taking in a historical artifact (or art) versus being an artist where you take in what you see and then create something unique and creative that enhances the experience for you and for others. I believe that there is room for both depending on the situation. Such as life today where people photograph and video things versus stopping to just enjoy the experience.2. We want to be happy in our lives and travel seems to provide us with a mechanism to do that. The problem is that we only experience this happiness while traveling because we are outside of the constraints of work and our struggle to survive3. De Botton advocates travelling alone to be an advantage. He believes that responses to the world are molded by the company that we keep, therefore we align our curiosity to fit in with the expectations of others.

I really like Alain de Botton, this is the 4th book by him I have read, I also love to travel, so this seemed like a perfect fit, but even though there are some very original thoughts about the experience of travel in the bottonesque style that I have come to love, the book seemed slightly boring and I had some trouble finishing it, which didn't happen at all with Essays on Love, Status Anxiety of The joys and sorrows of work. It is still insightful and well written but I found myself repeatedly losing interest.

De Botton arranges his subject in the relaxed sequence of Departure, Motives, Landscape, Art, and Return. Each section except the last has two sub-chapters. Departure, for example, has "On Anticipation" and "On Traveling Places." Typically an author, artist, or journalist's sense of travel is introduced through their work and the theme is expanded; sometimes with other artists, sometimes with personal stories of De Botton. The book is rich in literary and artistic references.De Botton deeply explores the sensations of travel. He opened my mind to ways of feeling travel that I may have remotely felt but not had the skill to dwell on and fully develop. I say "immersive" because the book is an experience. Meandering, but gracefully guided by De Botton, I emerged on the other side of my reading as a different person, a more sensitive and attentive traveler. Unthought-of possibilities of thinking, doing, and feeling while traveling are now in my mind. I have a kinship with De Botton, but also with his subjects like Baudelaire, Flaubert, Edward Hopper, the explorer Humbolt, and Ruskin. Excellent company!

De Botton's book is another that I came across at the library in which I work. I was so enamored of it that I had to own it (3 cheers for Amazon!) The book is a series of essays ("On Anticipation", "On the Exotic", "On Possessing Beauty", etc.) interspersed with black&white reproductions of paintings and photographs. Each essay/chapter contains a place/places and a "guide/guides." For example, in #2 ("On Travelling Places"), the "guides" are French poet Charles Baudelaire and American painter Edward Hopper. Using quotes from the former and paintings from the latter, de Botton evokes the romance of airports and train stations and other places of arrival & departure--how they are the stuff of hopes, dreams, inspirations. He also writes of the joy of the journey itself, where one is transported not only away from the physical familiarity of home, but into a state of suspension, where--for a time--the worries & complaints of everyday living don't exist. I have experienced this sensation as well as the joys of anonymity--an experience which can transform even a cheap motel room into a sanctuary from daily demands.Hightly recommended.

If you have a well worn copy of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' on the shelf, then you will want to add this one to the collection. Neither of these books is about Buddhism, but both explore in their own ways what John Ruskin proposed as the twin purposes of art: to make sense of pain and to fathom the sources of beauty. To which the author suggests, "the pleasure we derive from [this] journey may be dependent more on the mind-set we travel with than the destination we travel to."

I love this writer. Charming, self-effacing, funny, interesting. Great read I've gifted this book to a few people as well.

#81,328 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I purchased this as a companion to the clock oil I needed. It is written for readers who are knowledgeable about clock repair, not for the average person who knows nothing about the terminology. I wanted a simple instruction with illustrations on how to oil my pendulum clock -- this book did not help. There were very few illustrations and none that even matched my grandfather clock (which isn't that old). If you are looking for a history of clock repair and tool descriptions and understand all the terminology, then this might be for you. I returned it.

The author may live in Indiana but he uses the Queen's English. Obviously a Brit and a lover of the English language. Some may think his writing is slightly stilted, but to borrow a phrase from Winston Churchill, It is something up with one must simply be prepared to put.The first chapter must be read first before jumping to any other subject in the book. It details theory and troubleshooting. Unfortunately, most of it went over my head, but a second read-through was quite enlightening. Things began to make sense, especially since I then had a clockwork mechanism in my hands. The drawings were created by a professional machinist and can be somewhat confusing to the layman. Hopefully, anyone willing to take on clocks as a hobby will have some mechanical abilities.I was able to determine why my clock was striking a few hours incorrectly and make the correction. And, in the process, learned to do the oiling that needs to be done every two to three years. Without oil, clock parts begin to deform and/or wear away. Very important. Clock oil kits are available online for under $20.00. And yes, you can oil the mechanism on the kitchen table; use a soft mat.I used a few miniature and small screwdrivers and small, smoothed jawed needle-nose pliers that I bought from Sears. More advanced work, such as machining new parts, installing new bushings in pivot holes, or adding metal by silver soldering, will require training and expensive shop equipment.I would not consider this a book for rank beginners; more of a middle-level book that carries a wide variety of repair topics on many different types of clocks. It's probably great for the apprentice in the clock repair shop. Yes, the book did work for me. It was informative. I'm glad I bought it but I doubt that I'll use most of the information in it. Then again, who knows?

I bought this book along with several others to learn about basic clock repair to maintain and repair my small collection of mechanical clocks. The organization of topics is very logical, first starting with clock troubleshooting. His first chapter does assume a working knowledge of clock part terminology that,at times, leaves the novice lost. More pictures of his discussion points would have been helpful here. However,follow-on chapters on the various components of the clock movement and their repair is excellent. I would suggest anyone just starting to learn clock repair read Steven G. Conover's "Clock Repair Basics" prior to reading this handbook. This will provide much needed basic terminology with pictures/diagrams to help learn the parts breakdown.Laurie Penman's handbook is a good buy to add knowledge and repair processes. His repair techniques involve more hand tool useage than many repairers do, allowing the novice to obtain basic repair tools to address many of the minor adjustments and repairs to clock movements. His chapter on tools clearly outlines the uses for the more expensive and elaborate tools: lathe; depthening tool and bushing tool; thus giving the novice a better understanding of repair limitations without additional tool investment.

This little book is a bounty of clock repair approach and technique for the thoughtful reader. It does require some effort to read and understand. That effort will be rewarded if you're seriously interested in old mechanical clocks (which in itself is an anachronistic effort, rewarded with regular ticking and melodious chimes)In 50 years, all the experience and mastery of this handbook will be lost to time, as clock repair and those who make a living at it go the way of buggy whip manufacturers...

Have to love the British DNA bias against German and French made clocks. Great advice but far more technical than what we needed. Laurie clearly is an expert and he writes very well. Book covers old world clocks. If you are looking to repair one of the battery operated clocks this is not for you. But if you have an old world Grandfather clock or other non-battery powered clock you will find useful information here. Recommended.

I'm at best a novice when it comes to clock repair. I bought this book to try to learn some basics. But the book is written for someone who's already familiar with clock mechanisms. For example, the author strongly recommends that everyone read chapter 1 to get the big picture even if they have a specialized interest that's covered in another chapter. But chapter 1 is full of terms that are never explained with very limited and not very useful illustrations. This book may be very useful to someone who already knows about clocks and is trying to fill in their knowledge in some specialized areas but don't waste your time if you don't already know a lot about how clocks work and the names of all the parts.

This book is not for the beginner. It launches right into terms and concepts that will leave the uninitiated in a fog. I've had some pretty intensive training in servicing various brands of time lock movements, and I still struggled to figure out some of the book's material. It seems more like a reference work for the experienced clock repairer.

Good book for basics... however it gets into advanced clock repair that most do not have the tools for. Also not enough terminology and explanations for clock repair.

I just graduated from college, and I wish I’d read this in high school. My roommate’s mother who works as a financial consultant recommended it. This book is the clearest introduction to investing I’ve found anywhere. It helped me understand all the options, and it uses academic research to back up its recommendations. It’s easy to read, requiring very little prior knowledge, and gives you great advice about how to invest your savings responsibly. I’m lucky to have found this gem so early in my career so I know I’ll be able to save for long term goals like buying a house, having kids, and retiring comfortably!

Great book for beginners. I buy these to give to people who have given no thought as to how to prepare for their future...and there are a lot of these. I was one of them, and thankfully I woke up in time, so I have made it a point to try to urge young people to give some thought to their financial future. This book is very accessible to someone who "hasn't got a clue." Several people I know began saving and investing as a result of reading the copy I gave them, and it is going to make a world of difference to them when they reach retirement age. So if you are one of the people "without a clue," this is the book for you.

After my 35 plus years of investing, I totally agree accept with his overall recommendation to use bond mutual funds for the fixed income portion. Normally I would agree, however with interest rates at about 40 year lows, and going up, laddered new issue bank cd's between 1 through 5 years is better. Vanguard, Fidelity, or Schwab can 'hand hold' through the process for free and no commissions or annual expenses. Plus the are federally insured.

This did a good job of demystifying a lot of investing concepts. Having done some additional reading since, I can say that this was a very solid introduction and I'm happy to have had the opportunity to start here as opposed to having to wade through the dregs of the internet trying to find clear, concise information.

If you're starting out on investing, this book is a very-much appreciated start and this is coming from a fellow newbie. I really appreciated the addressing of the facts from fiction on the consumer economics behind the investment sector. The sector that monitors sectors. I believe this book sets the tone of the proper perspective one should have before investing. The book establishes a baseline and inserts itself right in the middle of most americans, investment instruments for wealth and financial advisers. I don't believe any favors were made by writing this book except to be honest with the readers. Having just recently started investing as I approach 40 I've become more of an open airwave antenna picking up all the market news and signals. We have input sensors on 16 hours a day and we need to be cognizant of 'decision triggers'. The author associates the same principles to investing and tactfully shows the alternate view. The polite presentation of the views allow room for the investigative reader to explorer riskier areas (stocks). The tech stocks these days seem to be a lighthouse (not like the light bulb on the cover, but I'm in Tech... can't.. reeezist). The author is a CPA as clearly noted on the cover. That is, the letter designation for passing the much harder Series test. Ok, so I didn't mention the contents of the book. Hey, it's a "100 pages or less" and the man deserves his keep.

As I write this review every other review for this great little book gives it five stars and that is well deserved. For new investors, or for ANY investor who is not really (and I mean *really*) sure they are on top of things, this book is where to begin. It will show you the big picture and give you a clear view of every important aspect of investing for the long haul. There are other books that go into more detail or that have more rigorous theoretical discussion. Some have very entertaining histories and anecdotes, but most of those swamp the beginner in side issues or details one can't appreciate without the concise overview provided here. There are also many other introductory books, and I have read a few, but this one stands out for its clarity. You actually don't *need* any more than is in this book, but if you start to dig into the resources listed at the end you will probably want to dig deeper and learn more. When I came across this book I had already read most of what it lists in the Resources section and can say it contains a great selection.I read this book after about six months of self-education about investment strategies and can say that it covers all the important aspects in a highly organized way that is easy to follow. After reading this I bought three more copies to give to my (adult) children. I didn't think any of the other books I read would have been of any use to them. Perhaps after they read this one they will follow up on their own.

But that's ok, I knew that going in. If you are completely new to investing, this is actually a fantastic book because it will instil that important first impression that is critical when you first realize it's necessary for you to at least start reading about this stuff... that there is really not all that much to know! this easy to read book is guaranteed to take a weight off your shoulders and point you in the right direction for the small amount of reading you'll need to do over and above what's in this already. I would suggest "a random walk down wall street

I graduated from grad school about an year ago and.wanted to more about basics of investing besides savings accounts and CDs. after checking reviews and summaries of a bunch of books on Amazon I stumbled across this book. The book explains the main ideas behind IRAs, 401ks, Roth IRA, stocks, bonds, different kinds of index funds and ETFs. The book is written in an easy to.understand manner and you can understand it very easily. It also presents ideas about a balanced investing strategy and what not to do. In my humble and novice opinion if you ask me for a first book to learn about investing , this will be my pick.
