I've been teaching biological and medical sciences at many different levels for 17 years, and have worked as a freelance editor/contributor for several publishers, and I cannot recommend this book. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because there is even worse available.The gold standard for this material is a text by a guy whose name is also a brand of canned soup; it has superior graphics, better chapter exercises, and better organization of the material; this is what really makes one bio text better than another. Biology is biology, and most authors get the facts right. Even if you must buy Enger, you should also buy a used copy of the soup-name guy.
Terrible and confusing explanation of transcription and translation (of DNA into RNA, and then RNA into proteins). I found much better and concise explanations describing the above processes on Youtube. Not the greatest textbook, what a pity we are forced to buy it for the course. (Author review: Sylvia Mader) Also, I believe there are factual mistakes in it. I will double-check and then report the actual mistakes in this review.In regards to this rental, I was sent a hard copy of the textbook, WITHOUT an access code (which was OK for me, because I knew it). But if you buy thinking there is an access code with it, please know that there is not.
I bought this textbook so I could study to exempt a low-level biology prerequisite course at my university. For a science textbook, it is rather short at only 704 pages. However, the information is generally accurate and the treatment more than enough to engender a basic understanding of the biological sciences in the student. Especially helpful were the explanatory sections on cellular respiration, protein synthesis, DNA replication and mitosis, subjects that I feel are essentially the backbone and core concepts of introductory biology courses. The images were detailed quite well and the text is quite easy to read and understand. The authors clearly had a beginning student in mind.I recommend this book for any student wanting a basic understanding of biology.
A waste of money. The BSN numbers didn't match and I couldn't use the book. It was the wrong edition. I didn't even want a refund. I simply asked to switch it out and pay the difference if need be. NOTHING! I have this book for sale if anyone wants it!
right book, great price Much cheaper than campus bookstore. Rented this for around $25 and bought my online code separate...saved a lot of money that way
Helped me get through my BIO 101 class. Had very useful information on it and I even surprised the professor with some of the facts that were in the textbook.
Covers all the necessary information in Biology. I am still reading it. Very informative.
I knew this book would be coming to me used, but I didn't know to what extent in terms of writing and highlighting. I was unpleasantly surprised, on more than one occasion, at the extreme highlighting to where the whole page is pink and you cant even read the text! Paying almost $50 for this, I was expecting something better. :(
