Fans of Alan Furst will love this well-written, true story of a man whose actions saved thousands. Adolfo Kaminsky helped save untold numbers of lives by providing false identity papers to Jews and others fleeing the authorities in Nazi occupied France. Although barely 18, his knowledge of cloth dying gave him the skills to both create and erase inks of any color. With this he created identity documents from scratch, erased dangerous notations from real documents, and provided a lifeline to those hunted by the authorities. Great writing and extremely engaging. You'll look up from the book and it will suddenly be 2 a.m.!

I downloaded the book, intending to read it later, then thought I'd read "the first page," but ended up reading for the rest of the day, sitting on the edge of my seat. Too unbelievable to be fiction, too filled with wild coincidences; a young Jewish boy couldn't continue his education in Paris past elementary school, so was apprentice to clothes dyer, doing his own chemical research at home to become, at 17, an expert forger. As the Germans took over Paris, Adolfo worked tireless behind the scenes without pay, forging original, authentic-quality documents for escaping Jews from homemade equipment and his own inventions. After the war, he continued helping oppressed people fleeing cruel regimes all over the world for most of his life. Many of his colleagues were captured and killed, or committed suicide, yet Adolfo continued to miraculously escape detection.

A wonderful narrative which gets into some technical detail about how Adolfo Kaminsky managed to create perfect forgeries of documents over the decades, as well as telling about the WWII and the post-war period where he worked tirelessly for the safety and freedom of those who were under the thumb of the Third Reich, post-war French imperialism and other despotic governments around the world. The tension and suspense of those times is perfectly communicated by Sarah Kaminsky, using her father's documents and recollections. Highly recommended for those wanting to learn more about the smaller battles which resulted in thousands of lives being saved.

Imagine being a passport forger during World War II and knowing that with mathematical accuracy that your sleep would cost lives. Imagine keeping your work a secret from all your friends and family and none knowing of your true life. Imagine your life work being rescuing people who would otherwise be murdered with no one ever knowing or recognizing your labor, your passion and never receiving recognition for your labor.

A story about the life of Adolfo Kaminsky one may think would be boring, possibly textbook-like, but far from it. Instead it is a story about a fascinating man whom one could argue was heroic.Starting with life under Nazi rule to working with liberation groups throughout the world, this Forget was the rare idealist who kept to his principles of helping victims and the downtrodden. Reading this book should be required reading.

Adolfo selflessness and commitment to what he thought was right and just is inspiring. I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter and see the next inspiring event in his life. I liked the book so much I will read it again to see what I missed on the first reading. Anyone interested in WWII espionage and the behind the scenes actions - this is another small part of the bigger war to bring WWII to an end.Thank you Adolfo for stepping up and doing what needed to be done.

Read the book in 2 sittings, it is a page-turner. I find the recounting of Kaminsky's forgeries after WWII equally fascinating as those during the war. The conflicts after the war are during my lifetime, and the book provides new perspectives on various liberation movements around the world.

not the best written book, but a great story. Written by the daughter, but in the 1st person of her father, the 'forger', this book kept me engaged.

I am a voice teacher at KPCA and every single one of our voice students has a copy of this fantastic book! It is a wonderful resource for voice/music teachers and singers. I love hearing about students teaching and singing the songs in cannon with their family and friends. I only wish it were spiral bound, but it's worth a trip to the printers to pay the $4 to get it bound so that it lays flat.

A must have for the classroom music teacher. High quality rounds and canons. Great source of material to adapt for beginning orchestra as well. The new edition looks nice but I miss the coil binding of the old edition.

Excellent collection of rounds and canons, many that are not in any other collection.

For my daughter's first year teaching. Just what she wanted.

thanks!

Great book for music teachers!

Review

“A masterpiece of translation―fluent, elegant, vigorous.” - Rowan Williams, Master of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge“Irresistibly readable…turns Homeric epic into a poetic feast.” - Froma Zeitlin, Princeton University“A staggeringly superior translation―true, poetic, lively and readable, and always closely engaged with the original Greek―that brings to life the fascinating variety of voices in Homer’s great epic.” - Richard F. Thomas, Harvard University“This will surely be the Odyssey of choice for a generation.” - Lorna Hardwick, The Open University, London“Emily Wilson has produced a clear, vigorous, sensitive Odyssey that conveys both the grand scale and the individual pathos of this foundational story. This is the most accessible, and yet accurate, translation of Homer’s masterwork that I have ever read.” - Susan Wise Bauer, author of The History of the Ancient World“'Each generation must translate for itself,' T. S. Eliot declared. Emily Wilson has convincingly answered this call: hers is a vital Odyssey for the twenty-first century that brings into rhythmic English the power, dignity, variety, and immediacy of this great poem.” - Laura Slatkin, New York University“Having a female scholar and translator look with fresh eyes upon one of the foundational myths of Western civilization is nothing short of revolutionary. Emily Wilson’s riveting translation of The Odyssey ripples with excitement and new meaning. This important and timely addition to our understanding of Homer will be enjoyed for generations to come.” - Aline Ohanesian, author of Orhan’s Inheritance“Emily Wilson's Odyssey sings with the spare, enchanted lucidity of a minstrel fallen through time. Ever readable but endlessly surprising, this translation redefines the terms of modern engagement with Homer’s poetry.” - Tim Whitmarsh, author of Battling the Gods“A remarkable new translation. Poised and unadulterated―a feast for the senses.” - Daisy Dunn, author of Catullus’ Bedspread“This is it―a translation of The Odyssey that is 'eminently rapid…plain and direct,' as Matthew Arnold famously described Homer himself. It is also contemporary and exciting. A gift.” - Barbara Graziosi, author of The Gods of Olympus

I have read and taught the Odyssey at least five times over the past twenty years. And Emily Wilson's version is a godsend. It is, by far, the most readable version out there. It never strains to be "epic" the way so many translations do. Instead, she uses today's English while also hewing faithfully to the unrhymed iambic pentameter that Shakespeare, Milton, and Wordsworth established as the epic form in English poetry. The result is a perfect blend between an Odyssey for today's reader and a "poetic" narrative. I read it all in three sittings because I couldn't put it down. Who would have thought someone could turn the Odyssey into a page turner? I can't wait to try out this new translation on my students. Hats off to Emily Wilson!

Emily Wilson's new translation of Homer's Odyssey is extraordinary in so many ways. Among its many attributes is clear, and finely-tuned language set in iambic pentameter that puts the poetry back in one of the Western cannon's greatest poems. Readers need not wade through purple and overblown blank verse, twice the length of the original text to finally arrive, with Odysseus in Ithaca. His story and character, as well as those of Penelope and Telemachus are fashioned in direct, active language that lets the hero's deeds and trials, as well as those of his wife and son, impress or disappoint the reader. Reading Wilson's version was like reading The Odyssey for the first time. There has been much fuss about her choice of a few words--"complicated, canapes, tote". Those complaining can't possibly have read the work or at least not her introduction where she explains quite convincingly the choices she made and purpose in providing yet another interpretation.Wilson is equally fearless in wading into the politics of translation arguing it is chauvinism to translate the slave women/concubines as "maids or servants". More than inaccurate it distorts the unpleasant truth about Greek civilization: it was a culture sustained by slave labor (as were nearly all others at the time). She ratchets things up another notch when she takes on Robert Fagles translation of the slave girls as "sluts" and "whores" who deserve to be slain. Why she wonders if they had no agency in life can they be responsible for the deeds of men who are at best coercing sex, at worst raping them? Wilson says flat out his attitude and translation are misogynistic. She also makes convincing arguments in her introduction that Penelope is more dimensional than credited and Helen of Troy refreshingly free of guilt for deeds committed in her name. The introduction, translator's notes, maps and glossary all enhance the reader's enjoyment, making it a truly epic experience.

I've read the translations of Fitzgerald, Fagles, and now Wilson. I've followed a pre-MOOC online course on the poem from Stanford. I'm in no way a scholar of it, can't read ancient Greek, etc. but at age 81 I consider The Odyssey the greatest book I have ever read, for itself and for its influence on my ways of thinking and of living.I liked the Wilson version and find many aspects of it the best version. But overall I still find the Fitzgerald version the most satisfying. The main reason is that, in comparison to the others, it is best at creating the mood of an ancient, epic, poem. In contrast, Washington Post reviewer Madeline Miller praised Wilson for her "fresh, unpretentious, and lean" language -- exactly why I prefer Fitzgerald who is a bit more gaudy, flowery, and, yes, far from lean. I love it when he repeats, for the nth time, "Son of Laertes and the Gods of old, Odysseus, master of land ways and sea ways..." and other such formulaic hints that we are not reading a James Bond or even a Scott Fitzgerald, nor Salinger, nor McEwan, nor certainly a Hemingway novel -- the content should perhaps be enough to distinguish Odyssey as the great epic it is, but I like the complementing embellishments of Fitzgerald's version. For a more important difference, compare the climax, as Odysseus is about to slaughter the suitors: Fitzgerald has him say:"You yellow dogs, you thought I'd never make ithome from the land of Troy. You took my house to plunder, twisted my maids to serve your beds. You daredbid for my wife while I was still alive.Contempt was all you had for the gods who rule wide heaven, contempt for what men say of you hereafter.Your last hour has come. You die in blood."while Wilson's has it:"Dogs! So you thought I would not come back homefrom Troy? And so you fleeced my house, and rapedmy slave girls, and you flirted with my wifewhile I am still alive! You did not fearthe gods who live in heaven, and you thoughtno man would ever come to take revenge. Now you are trapped inside the snares of death."Aside from Fitzgerald’s far more poetic language, there is a substantive difference. Wilson focuses on fear: the suitors didn’t fear either the gods, or the vengeance of men. But Fitzgerald focuses on breaking the rules, on disrespecting the mores of their time: the suitors were contemptuous of both the gods, and the opinions of their fellow men. The Odyssey is about many things, including of course homecoming; for me it’s mostly about doing the right thing.Anyhow, all this is nothing more than IMHO. Read either version, or that of Fagles, you won’t go wrong. It's an all-time great read.

The older translations of the Odyssey are wonderful, but this one adds so much! It’s clearer for modern readers and the contemporary usage and vocabulary makes it come to life for our generation. If I were assigning the Odyssey for a high school or college class, I’d definitely choose this translation. For personal/pleasure reading I’ve enjoyed this as much as the Fitzgerald version. I hope Professor Wilson shares her take on the Iliad next.

The first stanzas will make you perk up and realize that this is the most interesting translation of the Odyssey for our time.A very controversial word in Greek in the first stanza is rendered as a description of Odysseus as "a complicated man" -- not just shrewd, wily, erratic, often turning -- as others have translated. Bravo Ms. Wilson!

Beautiful art book containing wonderful poster images and history of magic.Just to clarify some of the differences between this and the earlier book:1. The original book had 650 pages, this edition has 544.2. This book is also in 3 languages (English, French and German). It still weighs around 14lbs. and is a large format art book. (Page height is nearly 15.5 inches). It's gorgeous, fairly heavy, and I'm happy to have it! Honestly, if I hadn't read about the earlier version of the book I would never guess this was "scaled down". It's still a very impressive book! From http://www.wildabouthoudini.com/2013/06/magic-1400s-1950s-released-in-new.htmlUPDATE: Re the differences between this and the larger edition, the following is from the editor of the book, Noel Daniel:"The smaller version is meant to offer readers the chance to discover the wonderful world of magic for a great price. To be able to offer a smaller version of the first edition (the larger book) at a trade price, we did need to reduce its physical size, which meant also reducing its page count and therefore the image count. Even though the smaller version is reduced by ca. 150 images of the original 900, it is still a fantastic, illustrated overview of 500 years of magic. This material has never been brought together in this manner before, and much of it has never been published. I spent many, many months personally visiting archives and incredible private collections to select these images from the original 30,000 that I gathered. Both the large and smaller versions are important publishing events in the history of magic. In terms of the images that I cut from the original larger size, of course, it was very hard, as all of the images mean a great deal to me. However, I tried to retain critical images that I felt readers would like to see, while cutting images that perhaps were repeated in some aspect or contained information that could be found in other images."

As my husband put it, this book (like some other monsters published by Taschen, such as one on Hieronymus Bosch) is more than a coffee-table book—it’s practically big enough to be the coffee table itself. I kid you not, it’s almost too heavy to lift. If you or someone you know is a fan of stage magic, though, it’s a must… and, at its current (2017) price on Amazon, quite a bargain (I think it used to be much more expensive).Although the book traces stage magic back to its medieval origins among traveling jugglers and purveyors of the cups-and-ball trick, it focuses on the entertainment’s heyday, the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The text, in English, French, and German, provides an interesting history, detailing the different performance venues, types of tricks, and individual magicians who were popular at different times. I think the book’s greatest draw, though, is the endless array of posters used to advertise the acts, all displayed in full color and many at full page size or even two pages (quite a spread, given the size of the book), and each extensively captioned in the same three languages. The best of these lithographed posters, some of them nine feet tall, are real works of art, full of floating ladies, grinning skeletons, and dancing devils… not to mention the dapper, tuxedoed magicians themselves. There are also a fair number of black-and-white photos of the magicians performing. In fairness, if you are not fascinated by stage magic, the book’s awkward size and tendency to repetition (not surprisingly, many of the posters are very similar to one another) may make it less than appealing. For anyone who does want to see the many skillful ways in which people can be fooled—and made to love every minute of it—though, I heartily recommend it.

This volume about magic is one I'll cherish. It was an absolutely incredible bargain at the Amazon price of about $50, NEW. It weighs over 10 pounds and measures more than 10 by 15 inches. It has about 500 pages of thick paper and comes in a heavy slipcase. It provides an insightful historical perspective on the evolution of the art of magic, specifically on the ways individual performers have adapted their images, acts, advertising, and venues to stay relevant in response to changes in society, technology, audiences, and the entertainment industry in general. Each chapter has a brief essay (which appears in English, German, and French), but the star of this book is the spectacular treasure trove of graphics (with captions also in all three languages). Chapter 7 has only about three paragraphs of text on Houdini, but over 20 pages of outstanding Houdini photos and posters advertising his performances. There are many rare photos and beautifully reproduced lithographs throughout. This gem of a book is a fabulous tribute to the fantastic world of magic and magicians, and a real visual treat.

What a great book. Massive in size, Full Color and B&W reproductions of the early Magicians and their advertisements, most from the "Golden Age" of magic. This book is so massive, you need a table to read it on, it definitely is not a lap book. Has many short chapters on the magicians, all wrote in Three different languages , but easy to follow. If interested in magicians and their past history told in photos and posters, this is for you.
