Great guide for those wanting to know what critters are around. Excellent descriptions and sketches.
useful as a field guide
Really enjoying this book. Was given to me as a gift. We live on the outskirts of Anchroage in the mountains. We’ve seen so many of these tracks on the property and it nice to put an Animal to the imprint in the snow. I didn’t have a problem with the moose vs elk tracks as another reviewer described. The deminsions and gate are very dissimilar in the book imo. Anyway, with so few reviews I thought I’d post to show the difference of these two.
I'm disappointed in this book. Page 127 (moose) shows exactly the same track illustration like the tracks for elk page 133. Moose tracks are larger, with narrower pointed tips, often dewclaw prints showing, where elk tracks are more symmetrically rounded. Errors like this should not happen in a field guide.
This book was invaluable during our recent inspection of the property we purchased in Alaska. This format is easy to understand and it was easy to identify and differnetiate between the different species of animals inhabiting our land quickly just from scat and tracks. A must have for anyone wanting to live outside the city in Alaska.
