Ordered this book after visiting Montreal. It’s a good brief history of the city which I enjoyed reading.

Good book. I can't imagine visiting Montreal without having read this.

As the grandson of a French Canadien whose family has been in Lachine, Laval, and Montreal back to the 1660s I enjoyed reading about the growth and history of a great north American city.

Great info!!!

Looking for background for an upcoming trip to Montreal, I was fortunate to have come across Paul-Andre Linteau's book, which gave a wonderful historical perspective of the evolution of Montreal. Enjoyed the very early history up the 20th century, when there the problems and history of a great this N.American city were not unique. Would highly recommend and learned much regarding the French -English relationship over the centuries.

Poor with few insights. Wrote as an isolated city not as a part of Canada

The major strength of the book is that it starts with a discussion of Montreal from the time prior to European colonization. This discussion was well written and hard to put down. But as the book progressed to current times, it changed from an objective discussion of history to editorial. A major peeve was that while the author does mention the anglophone exodus from Montreal he presents it as an isolated fact without context of provincial elections or referendums on Quebec independence. I think that a city like Montreal deserves a better history than this book provides.

I really wanted to believe this book would be useful and well-written. Sadly neither is the case. The author makes inane connections between causes and events, sometimes even with no more than a comma. And either the translator is inept and not a native speaker of English, or the author is a bumbling writer of stale and often meaningless prose.Whatever. I wasted my time and money on this one.
