Amazon.com Review

Bartholomew and the Oobleck easily qualifies as a Seuss classic, first told way back in 1949. And its message--the importance of owning up to your mistakes and saying that you're sorry--is as timeless now as it was then. Bartholomew Cubbins serves thanklessly as pageboy to King Derwin of Didd, a headstrong man who's decided he isn't satisfied with mere sun, fog, rain, and snow. ("Humph! The things that come down from my sky!") He wants something else, something uniquely his own, so he calls in his royal magicians ("Shuffle, duffle, muzzle, muff. Fista, wista, mista-cuff. We are men of groans and howls, mystic men who eat boiled owls"). Happy to oblige, the magicians tell the king they can make "oobleck" fall from the sky, only nobody--not even the magicians--knows just what oobleck is. But after a night of arcane incantations, everyone in the kingdom gets a taste of the stuff (in the case of the Captain of the Guard, literally!), as the green, gluey goo gums up everything in sight. Of course, Bartholomew tries to help, but it's up to the king to save the day, as he learns to utter not magic words but simple words with magic in them: "I'm sorry." (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

I am happy that this book is finally being re-issued. It was my favorite Dr Seuss book when I was 7 years old and I am now 69. It is going to my grandson as a fifth year birthday book. I don't know why this one doesn't seem to be as available as the "first reader" books (i.e: Green Eggs and Ham"), or even as other stories for older readers (i.e.: "Horton Hears a Who"). But I love that it's once again available. The book is a sturdy hardback and seems to be well-made. The colors and text are crisp and very engaging and readable. Yea!

I didn't like this book. It is not a traditions Dr. Seuss book. It doesn't rhyme. It has magic in it where the magicians chant unknown words. I learned years ago not to speak unknown words in a chant. You don't know what you are inviting into your house. After 4 pages I was done. It's in the bottom of my books. All in all, not a good Dr. Seuss book!

This was by far my favorite Dr. Seuss book when I was a child ('way back in the early '60s). I read it over and over and over again--fascinated by the story and Seuss-y illustrations. My grandkids love Dr. Seuss, so I bought this one to read to them, only to realize that Seuss didn't use his signature rhyming style in this book! I hadn't noticed this as a kid--I just loved the story. So it's not quite as fun to read aloud as The Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle, and all the others, but my grandkids still love it and ask for it when I'm the one getting them to bed.

When I started reading this book to my son, I wondered why. By the time I finished I remembered why. Bartholomew is a hero. When the King wants something different and orders his magicians to deliver ... well, you know something bad is going to happen. Bartholomew warned the King not to. When it comes to pass, he tries to find someone who can help, but they all fall victim. In the end, he saves the day. He doesn't quit. He solves the problem and he's a hero. Great lesson for kids. It will stick with them for life.

This book has so many flaps! My kids enjoy this book, but I would save it for a child that is at least 2 or older. I got it for my 1 year old, who doesn't have enough patience to go through the flaps, and my 4 year old actually doesn't care for it too much because it doesn't catch his attention.

I read this book to my high school and university students as the literature review in a laboratory using corn starch and water. Students must pay attention and take notes. A prefab from a handout must be completed prior to coming to class. I then bring out Oobleck (some white, some green). Students must work with the substance, describe their observations and hypothesize what Oobleck is. It is a fun lab and clearly teaches the scientific method in preparation for future more complicated laboratories. This is truly a "hands on, minds on" lab. I store Oobleck in the refrigerator so it is cold when students begin handling it. Fun!

If you have never read this book, it is fabulous! When I was younger, it made such an impression that to this day (at 52yrs old), I still use the term Oobleck to describe miscellaneous messes, unidentifiable stickiness, indeterminate somethings stuck to my favorite things, etc. CHARMING, Creative (of course), and not quite as scary as the highly imaginative terrors in other books (Thing 1 & Thing 2, Sneetches, etc.). Funny! Great for all ages!

I had never heard of this one then my 9yo was having it read to her at school as part of their science project (making oobleck ie corn starch and water). She loved it and insisted we buy it. I thought, "hey, it's Dr. Seuss, can't go wrong with that!" My 4 yo loves it!!! I've had to read it to her many times as she is on a mission to memorize the magicians' chant. Weird kid.The story has a good moral (apologizing and taking responsibility for your actions) but, being Dr. Seuss I don't have to say it's fun to read. It's not The Lorax (best kids' book of all time) but it's good!
